AR/VR EXPERIENCES

GOOGLE EXPEDITIONS

With recent advancements in virtual reality and augmented reality, learning can now be enhanced in ways never seen before. One prime example of this is Google Expeditions. This is how Google describes this program: “Imagine swimming amongst coral reefs or staring into the eye of a miniature Category 5 hurricane. With Expeditions, teachers can take students on immersive journeys both with AR and VR” (“Bring Your Lessons to Life”). Teachers who sign up with Google Expeditions receive VR/AR kits for students to use. The VR/AR hardware enables teachers to take students on virtual field trips, which allows students to experience the world in ways never before imagined. The technology is central to this overall experience.

One great thing about experiential learning is its ability to affect all students, regardless of ability or skill. Of course, some students will learn quicker than others. However, tools like Google Expeditions allow all students access to learn about parts of the world that they may never have experienced otherwise. Many students will never travel to Dubai, but with Google Expeditions, they can experience it as if they were there. This is powerful, since most students will learn about the world from a textbook or website. With VR/AR, students can actually experience places, not just read about them.
